Instituting Proactive Policing Strategy

  • Securing $250K in grant funding to assist in the investigation and apprehension of violent offenders involved in gang, gun and drug trafficking
  • Reducing crime in the rural areas
  • Increasing enforcement of DWI laws
  • Reducing number of fatal crashes on county highways
  • Reducing crime in the Leech Lake Reservation through Community Policing Deputy deployment
Improving Technology & Operations
  • Auditing services to increase efficiencies and focus funding on Public Safety Duties
  • Installing on-board digital video recorders, communications technologies and computers in squad cars
  • Revising and updating Beltrami County Policy Manual
  • Instituting new policy manual for Sheriff’s office, including staff training
  • Controlling costs for housing jail inmates while maintaining DOC certification
  • Moving to new Judicial Center and provide top-notch facility security
  • Improving technologies to support Records Management Program, Computer Aided Dispatch and Mobile Field Reporting
  • Providing Crisis Intervention Team training for officers and jail staff through Upper Mississippi Mental Health Center
  • Supporting formation of local Mobile Crisis Intervention

Building Community Support
  • Providing training and oversight for professional law enforcement staff and volunteer organizations, including: Sheriff’s Posse, Community Guard, Bemidji Citizen’s Patrol, First Responders, Paul Bunyan Radio Club, ELF- Enabling Law Enforcement, Civil Air Patrol, Lakes Area Dive Team
  • Supporting the Family Advocacy Center of Northern Minnesota
  • Providing deputies to teach students about the dangers of drugs/alcohol through the DARE Program
  • Supporting the efforts of the Northwoods Coalition for Family Safety to protect women, children and men who experience violence in their homes
  • Supporting Headwaters Alliance for Suicide Prevention
Serving on Boards & Professional Alliances
  • Active member of Minnesota Sheriff’s Association
  • Elected as District One Representative for the Minnesota Sheriff’s Association Executive Board
  • Member of the Minnesota Sheriff’s Association Strategic Planning Committee
  • Appointed the Minnesota Sheriff’s Association Representative to the DNR ATV/OHV Advisory Board
  • Serves on Minnesota Sheriff’s Association’s Lexipol Policy Project Advisory Group, charged to develop the statewide policy manual for Minnesota’s 87 sheriff’s offices
  • Advisory Board member of the Family Advocacy Center of Northern Minnesota
  • Board Vice Chair of the Northwoods Coalition for Family Safety
  • Member on the Bemidji Area Race Relations Council
  • With Communications Supervisor Beryl Wernberg, Sheriff Hodapp serves on the Northwest Regional Radio Advisory Council
  • Chief Deputy Mike Bakke serves on the Northwest Indian OIC Executive Board
  • Assistant Jail Administrator Bill Ahern serves as a board member for the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Bemidji
